PASADENA, Texas — San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer was recognized by the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce as one of its citizens of the year during its annual gala on Friday, March 7, 2025.
“I am deeply honored to be named a South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year,” said Hellyer. “This recognition reflects the incredible community that San Jac is fortunate to partner with and is dedicated to creating opportunities for our citizens. Together we will continue to strengthen and grow our region and build a bright future for our students, their families, and our communities.”
The South Belt Ellington Chamber of Commerce welcomed more than 300 guests to its Bollywood themed gala, which was held at the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology on the San Jacinto College Central Campus. Others recognized as part of the event include Dr. Deann Powell, Pasadena ISD Superintendent, Citizen of the Year; Lisa Holbrook, President & CEO South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, Chairman’s Award; and, Bruce Summers, Volunteer of the Year.
The Chamber also paid a special tribute to the late Marie Flickinger, former San Jacinto College Board of Trustees Chair and a founding partner in the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce. Flickinger served for nearly 30 years on the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees and was the longest tenured chamber board member.
Dr. Hellyer was named the fifth chancellor of San Jacinto College in 2009. She served as executive vice president for resource development, vice chancellor for fiscal affairs, and executive vice chancellor before assuming her role as chancellor. Prior to joining San Jacinto College, Hellyer worked in corporate accounting and as a small business owner. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fort Hays State University, and an MBA and an Ed.D. in community college leadership from the University of Texas at Austin.
