Traffic Rules and Violations

For pedestrian and vehicle safety, it is important that everyone obey the traffic rules. While on campus, drivers are governed by the same Texas Motor Vehicle Safety laws that apply to other public roadways, in addition to college regulations. Review the driving rules and violations below.

If you witness or are involved in an auto accident while on campus, please report it immediately to our Campus Police. Officers will respond and investigate accidents that occur on campus property, file an accident report, facilitate the exchange of information between drivers, render first aid or summon medical assistance and request a tow if necessary.

Towing and Impounding

San Jac’s goal is to make sure that we have enough available spaces so you can park and get to where you need to go. All illegally parked vehicles are subject to being towed or impounded at the owner's expense. We also prohibit the parking of motorhomes, trailers or boats on campus.

Types of Violations

Traffic citations issued by San Jac police officers are:

  • College citations, which are subject to a fine. (There is an appeal process if warranted.)
  • State citations, which require a court appearance at a designated Justice of the Peace courthouse.
All traffic violations should be paid within 10 business/working days of issuance. Failure to resolve a college citation by payment or appeal within 10 days will result in an additional $2 late fee.

The 3 Steps for Appealing a Ticket

We understand that traffic tickets are not always open-and-shut cases. If you feel the citation is unjust, you have a right to appeal. You may only appeal a ticket within 10 business/working days from the date the ticket was issued. Here are the following steps for appealing your ticket:
  1. Fill Out Appeal Form

Complete an appeal form and submit it to Campus Police. Make sure your appeal is within 10 business/working days from the date of the ticket. Appeals will not be accepted after this time limit.

  2. Sit Tight

The Dean of Student Development will rule on the matter within three business days/working days (Monday-Friday). The campus police office does not review ticket appeals or make appeal decisions.

  3. Reach Out

To learn the verdict, please call the campus police office at 281-476-1820. Campus police will not call you to inform you of the outcome. Please allow 3-5 days from the date you turn in your appeal before calling.

Ticket Appeal Information and Form

  • A dismissed ticket is voided completely.
  • A probated ticket is voided until the student receives another ticket for the same offense. (Example: Parking in the staff charge of $15 is probated, and the student gets another ticket for parking in staff; a second offense of $30 – the first ticket is reinstated, and the student now owes a balance of $45.)
  • A denied ticket is upheld, and the student is responsible for the total amount listed.
  • Only school days are factored when figuring late fees. You are still responsible for the late fees accrued, even while waiting for an appeal. You may pay a ticket, and then appeal it – your account with the College would be credited the amount you paid for a probated or dismissed ticket.
  • Probates are cleared every fall semester. If you receive a ticket on the first day of the fall semester, it will be treated as your first violation, even if you received a ticket the previous summer or spring semesters.
  • Some appeals may result in one ticket violation being probated,  while another violation of the same ticket may be dismissed or denied. Some appeals may result in one ticket violation being probated, while another violation of the same ticket may be dismissed or denied. (Example: A “no permit” offense may be probated while a “parked in staff” offense will be denied.)
  • Campus police do not accept any payments or handle any transactions. Pay your fine through the “Make a Payment” link in My San Jac. or in person at the business office.
