What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a process of thinking and problem solving that can help you improve the quality of your projects and your work. Think of it as a set of tools that you can use to analyze where projects went wrong and identify room for improvement. It’s all about reducing errors and improving processes so you can work more efficiently, provide better service, and deliver higher quality results.

Where does the name Six Sigma come from?

The name Six Sigma comes from the field of statistics. It refers to a concept that measures how much a process deviates from perfection. The goal of Six Sigma is to have less than 3.4 defects per million opportunities—and that’s a really high standard.

How does Six Sigma work?

When you apply Six Sigma, you start with defining what specifically you’d like to improve and you collect data to make sure you have a solid understanding of how the process is currently working. Next, you analyze this data to identify the root causes of any issues and try to find solutions to fix them. Last, you put these solutions in action and monitor the process to ensure that it stays on track.

When you study Six Sigma, you can choose to pursue a certification at a level that’s right for you and suits your needs. At San Jac, we offer the Green Belt course, which is at a beginner/intermediate level, and the Black Belt course, which is at an advanced level. Different levels focus on different core topics and take different times to complete.
