San Jacinto College players, alumni selected in MLB Draft
HOUSTON, Texas — Two current and three former San Jacinto College baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft.
Coming off a season in which San Jac finished 51-15 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series, five student-athletes received word last week that they were drafted to Major League teams.
Mason Auer, a freshman outfielder and right-handed pitcher, was San Jac's highest selected player. The Tampa Bay Rays selected the Missouri (Kickapoo HS) native in the fifth round. He threw nine innings with 13 strikeouts and two saves on the mound. He owned an ERA of 3.00.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected left-hander Hunter Hollan, a freshman from Longview, Texas (Spring Hill HS). Hollan, selected in the 15th round, went 10-3 on the hill with a 3.08 ERA, 104 strikeouts ,and 17 walks in 73 innings of work.
Alumnus Brandon Birdsell was picked in the 11th round by the Minnesota Twins. The
right-hander, now a student at Texas Tech University, saw a shortened season this
year due to a torn rotator cuff that he suffered in April. In his eight appearances
for the Red Raiders, he went 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA to go along with 36 strikeouts.
Alumnus Bryant Salgado heard his name called in the 14th round of the draft, with
the Houston Astros picking up the Oregon State student-athlete. In his first year
with the Beavers, he threw for 26.2 total innings and put up a 1.01 ERA and a 1.125
WHIP.
The Kansas City Royals selected alumnus Cam Williams in the 19th round. This is Williams' second time being selected in the draft. He was a 39th round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2016 draft coming out of Gaither High School in Odessa, Florida. The infielder will continue his family legacy of baseball excellence. Williams' father, Reggie Williams, was a 25th round pick by the San Francisco Giants before playing as an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Angels during his four seasons in the major leagues.
